Before you buy

The Connectivity Standards Alliance describes Matter as devices from multiple brands working natively together with consistent and responsive local connectivity. Thread, according to the Thread Group, is a low-power IPv6 mesh based on IEEE 802.15.4. Matter devices use Wi-Fi or Thread; Matter over Thread devices need a border router.

Check your controller first

Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home each list Matter as supported. Read the maker’s page for your speaker, display or hub to confirm that it acts as a Matter controller, and whether it includes a Thread border router. For Apple Home, Apple says Thread accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub. See Thread border router explained.

One ecosystem, or several?

Matter multi-admin lets a device join several ecosystems. Start in the one you use most and share to others when needed; see Matter multi-admin.

Core items

Matter controller with Thread border router

$30–$150

The brain of the kit. It adds devices, runs automations and carries the Thread mesh. You may already own one; check before buying.

What to look for: Matter controller support and a Thread border router listed on the maker’s page, plus Ethernet or strong Wi-Fi, in your ecosystem of choice

Matter smart plugs × 2

$12–$30

The easiest first devices: a lamp or a fan, scheduled and controlled by voice. Mains-powered plugs also help the mesh.

What to look for: Matter certification, compact body, physical button, rated for your load, energy monitoring if you want it

See options on Amazon

Matter over Thread door and window sensors × 2

$20–$40

Triggers lights, alerts and routines without a hub app. Thread keeps battery use low.

What to look for: Matter and Thread on the box, replaceable coin cell, works with your border router

See options on Amazon

Matter smart bulbs × 2

$10–$25

Useful for routines such as a hallway light that comes on when a door opens.

What to look for: Matter certification, E26 base, brightness range, tunable white or color as needed

Nice to have

Matter temperature and humidity sensor

$20–$40

Adds a room reading and triggers for fans, humidifiers or dehumidifiers.

What to look for: Matter over Thread, replaceable battery, readings shown in your app

See options on Amazon

Matter smart switch or dimmer

$20–$60

Replaces the wall switch for a room so the bulb is never switched off at the wall.

What to look for: Matter certification, neutral wire needed or not, dimmer rating that matches your bulbs

Second Thread border router

$30–$150

Adds coverage and removes a single point of failure for the Thread mesh, as Home Assistant’s documentation notes.

What to look for: Thread border router from the same ecosystem, mains powered, placed at the other end of the home

Step by step

  1. Update the controller and your phone’s app.
  2. Add the plugs first and confirm they respond.
  3. Add the Thread sensors near the border router, then move them to their doors.
  4. Add the bulbs. Name each device by location.
  5. Create one routine, such as “hallway bulb on when the front door opens at night”.
  6. If a device will not pair, follow the Matter pairing fixes.

Cheaper or upgraded versions

Budget version, about $45–$100: use a speaker you own as the controller, then buy two Matter plugs and one Thread sensor.

Upgrade, about $300–$600: add a second Thread border router, a Matter switch for the main room, a temperature sensor and extra plugs. Consider the Matter bridge option if you own Zigbee devices.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Thread for a Matter starter kit?

No. Matter also runs over Wi-Fi. Thread suits battery sensors and gives the mesh. You need a Thread border router for Thread devices.

Will this kit work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home?

Matter devices can be added to all three. Amazon, Google and Apple each list Matter categories such as plugs, bulbs and sensors, but not every feature appears in every app.

Do I need a hub?

You need a Matter controller. A recent speaker, display or hub can do it, and many include a Thread border router. Check the maker’s list.

Can I add Zigbee devices later?

Yes. A hub with a Zigbee radio that works as a Matter bridge can expose Zigbee devices to Matter controllers.
