Alexa and Matter: Echo devices, Thread and what you can add

Updated

Most recent Echo devices act as the Matter controller for Alexa, but only some are also Thread border routers. Here is how to read Amazon’s list and what your Echo can add.

Three roles that people mix up

Matter setups use three separate jobs, and one Echo can do some of them but not all.

A Matter-over-Wi-Fi device needs only the first role. A Matter-over-Thread device needs the first and the second.

Which Echo and eero lines support what

Amazon’s developer page (updated May 1, 2026) lists these groups. Product lines and generations change, so treat the table as a reading guide, not a shopping list.

CapabilityWhat Amazon’s page says
Matter over Wi-FiMost recent Echo models and eero routers from eero 6 through eero Pro 7 and Beacon
Matter over ThreadThread-enabled Echo and eero devices only
Thread border router, Thread 1.3A subset: Echo Hub, Echo Studio, several Echo Show sizes, Echo Dot Max (2025), Echo Plus (2nd gen) and the eero models
Thread border router, Thread 1.1One earlier Echo generation
Software levelMatter 1.5 SDK, “but only for a subset of Matter 1.5 and lower device types”

Thread 1.3 is the newer Thread version; the Thread Group describes Thread as a low-power IPv6 mesh built on IEEE 802.15.4. If your Echo is not on the border router list, a Thread device can still work as long as another border router in your home (another Echo, an eero, or a router from another ecosystem) provides the mesh.

Device categories Alexa supports

Amazon’s category page (updated April 8, 2026) follows the Matter 1.5 device library. Alexa supports these categories:

Cameras are not on Amazon’s category page, even though the Connectivity Standards Alliance added a camera device type in Matter 1.5 (November 2025). A standard can be ahead of what a given controller supports, so check the controller’s list, not the standard’s.

How setup works, and why it fails

  1. Use the Alexa app’s add-device flow and scan the QR code on the device or its packaging. Alexa uses Bluetooth Low Energy to pass Wi-Fi or Thread credentials to the device, so keep the phone’s Bluetooth on and stand close to the device.
  2. Thread devices need a Thread border router to commission them first. If your Echo is not one, add one before the device.
  3. Join the 2.4 GHz network. Most Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices expect it. Our Matter device won’t pair guide walks through the common failures.

Local control and multiple ecosystems

Amazon says direct Matter connections let Alexa control devices locally, which reduces latency and improves reliability, and that a Matter connection added alongside a cloud add-on lets Alexa keep control during internet outages. Matter also supports multi-admin: one device can be joined to Alexa, Apple Home and Google Home at the same time (see Matter multi-admin). Voice commands and remote access from outside the home still depend on the internet.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Echo a Thread border router?

Only certain Echo and eero lines are. Compare your model name with the Thread border router list on Amazon’s Matter page, because older Echo devices may support Matter over Wi-Fi without being border routers.

Do I need an Echo for Matter devices to work with Alexa?

You need a Matter-enabled Echo or eero as the controller. The Alexa app alone is not enough to control Matter devices locally.

Can I use Matter devices with Alexa and Google Home at the same time?

Yes, through multi-admin. You add the device to one ecosystem, then share it to the other from that device’s settings.

Why does Alexa say “device not found” while adding Matter?

Common causes are Bluetooth off on the phone, a 5 GHz-only or isolated guest network, a missing Thread border router for Thread devices, or a device already paired to another controller that needs resetting.
