Before you buy
- You need a hub. Apple says you must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories to Home, and that Thread-enabled accessories need a Thread-enabled hub. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically once they are set up; an Apple TV becomes one when added to a room.
- Match the device to the network. Thread sensors need a Thread border router. Wi-Fi Matter plugs and bulbs do not. See Do you need a home hub for Apple Home?
- Check the Matter logo and the supported category. Apple’s accessory page marks products that work with Apple Home.
- If you add cameras, check HomeKit Secure Video support and your iCloud+ plan: Apple lists one camera on 50 GB, up to five on 200 GB, and unlimited on 2 TB and above. See HomeKit Secure Video explained.
What each piece does
| Piece | Network | Example automation |
|---|---|---|
| Hub | Wi-Fi/Ethernet; Thread border router if Thread-enabled | Runs all automations while you are away |
| Matter plug | Wi-Fi or Thread | Turn a lamp on at sunset |
| Matter bulb | Wi-Fi or Thread | Warm dim light after 9 PM |
| Contact sensor | Thread | Front door opens → hallway light on |
If you later add devices that work with Google Home or Alexa too, multi-admin lets you share them.
Core items
Apple Home hub (HomePod or Apple TV)
$100–$200The hub unlocks remote access, automations, sharing and Matter accessories. Without one, most of the rest of this kit will not work as intended.
What to look for: a HomePod or Apple TV that Apple lists as a home hub, Thread-enabled if you plan to use Thread sensors, plugged in at home on Wi-Fi or Ethernet
See options on AmazonMatter smart plugs × 2
$10–$25The easiest first devices: one for a lamp, one for a fan or a coffee maker (check the appliance label). Each shows up in Apple Home and can be added to other ecosystems later.
What to look for: Matter logo, 15 A / 1,800 W rating, a QR setup code, energy monitoring if you want usage
See options on AmazonMatter smart bulbs (E26) × 2
$10–$25Light scenes and schedules are the quickest wins for a new smart home. Matter bulbs avoid a separate bridge.
What to look for: Matter logo, E26 base, brightness to match the bulb you are replacing, Thread or Wi-Fi as your network allows
See options on AmazonThread contact or motion sensors × 2
$20–$40Sensors trigger automations: a door sensor that turns on a hallway light, or a motion sensor for a bathroom night light. Thread sensors run for a long time on a coin cell.
What to look for: Matter over Thread, a coin-cell or AA battery, a Thread-enabled hub nearby

Matter smart lock
$130–$300A first step toward keyless entry. Do this after the basics work.
What to look for: Matter over Thread, keypad, physical key backup, fit for your door (check thickness and backset)

$40–$150A camera that supports HomeKit Secure Video records clips to iCloud after Apple devices at home analyze them.
What to look for: the “Supports HomeKit Secure Video” label, indoor or outdoor rating as needed, wired or rechargeable power; needs a supported iCloud+ plan

$15–$35A low-cost safety sensor for the kitchen, laundry room or under a sink.
What to look for: Matter, a loud local alarm, a replaceable battery

- Update your iPhone, then set up the HomePod or Apple TV as the home hub and check it under Home Hubs & Bridges in the Home app.
- Plug in a smart plug, open the Home app and scan its Matter QR code. Name it by room.
- Add the bulbs and sensors the same way, one at a time.
- Create a simple automation: sensor triggers a light. Test it from inside and then from outside Wi-Fi to confirm the hub works remotely.
- Keep the QR codes: photograph them or store the packaging inserts in a drawer for resets.
Cheaper or upgraded versions
Budget version, about $40–$100: an Apple hub you already own plus two Matter plugs and two Matter bulbs. Skip sensors until you need them.
Expanded version, often $370–$870: the core kit plus a Matter lock, a HomeKit Secure Video camera or doorbell, a water leak sensor and a second hub for resilience. Add an iCloud+ plan that covers the cameras you run.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an Apple TV or HomePod to start?
Yes. Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories and to control your home away from it.
Can I use Matter devices from other brands in Apple Home?
Yes. Look for the Matter logo, then scan its QR code in the Home app.
Do I need a Thread border router for plugs and bulbs?
Not if they use Wi-Fi. Thread devices, such as the sensors in this kit, need a Thread-enabled hub.
How much does Apple Home cost per month?
Apple Home itself has no fee. HomeKit Secure Video cameras need a supported iCloud+ plan.
