Matter and Thread
Updated
What Matter and Thread are, what a border router does, how multi-admin works and how to fix devices that refuse to pair.
Matter is a common language for smart home devices, maintained by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, that lets one device work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. It runs over Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet. Thread is a low-power mesh network used by many Matter sensors, locks and buttons; it needs a Thread border router in the home.
Matter simplifies buying, but support for each device category still varies by ecosystem. Check that your controller supports the category you want before buying.
See Matter vs Zigbee for how the two fit together.
